Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi's third runway commences operations today:
The third runway at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi commenced operations today from 6.00 am. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the first flight to touch down on the new runway was an Air India flight, scheduled to land at 6.15 a.m. The runway was inaugurated on the 21st of last month but was not fully operational. The decision to formally open the new runway was taken at a joint meeting called by Ministry of Civil Aviation yesterday comprising of all stakeholders like the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the airlines. The meeting was chaired by Shri K N Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The new runway (which is almost four kms. away from the old runways) according to DIAL officials, will double the airport's peak-hour capacity from 35-40 landings and take offs per hour to 75. The existing two runways handle nearly 700 flights a day. DIAL would ensure that the CAT-III B facilities at the runway are commissioned by November 2008 before the winter season with fog sets in. The new runway is equipped to handle new generation aircraft like the A380 and will also ensure that there is least air congestion at the airport. The 4,430-metre long and 75-metre wide runway, christened as '11-29', is the longest in India and the second longest in Asia. The longest runway in Asia is at the Qamdo Bangda Airport in Tibet which is 5,500 metres long.
